Artist Profile: Janice Moorhead

Although originally from Montreal, for the past 37 years, a lovely rural area near Wakefield, Quebec has been

the place I call home.

A graduate from the University of Ottawa"s visual arts program, I have been a practicing artist since 1985.  While well known across Canada as a glass artist, in recent years, I have chosen to pursue painting as it is a much freer form of expression.

Three years ago I began a series of paintings, titled "Interiors". The room was a means to explore human narrative, creating an atmosphere that transported the viewer into a world of interpretation.  Shadows, paint drippings, textures and "happy accidents" all played a strong role transforming the mundane flat surfaces of wall and floor.

Vertically orientated works explored the dramatic impact of space in rooms with high ceilings.

Then came the pandemic.....and along with it, themes of solitude and isolation.

Still using the "room" as metaphor, I started to become more and more interested in abstraction, focusing on the "outlines" of everyday objects.
